Flower from craft punch

Hi friends,
Today I want to share a quick birthday card I made my new oval craft punch. It's the same punch I used to decorate my New Years cards.

Here is the said punch in action.

I punched out around 8 petals per flower, embossed the petals in the middle, then glued them on a piece of paper and let the flower dry. To hide the space in the center of the flower where the petals meet, I glued a tight coil in one and a loose coil in the other.
This card just makes me so happy. I am looking for more ways to use this little punch.

Glitter paper.

A while ago while shopping for paper to make wedding cards for a friend's wedding, I came across glitter paper (I know, where have I been?). You know, paper with glitter in it. How nifty is that? Don't get me wrong, I love using the powder glitter but absolutely hate the mess it can cause especially when crafting with a 2 year old hyper-active, super - curious boy who loves to hang around mama when she is making cards. And, I have had the unfortunate experience of cleaning glitter from the carpet, not fun!

I bought only a few sheets of the paper, now I wish I had bought more :-( .

It's really sparkly and I used it to add some shimmer to an otherwise plain card.

New Year's cards, Part 2.

A couple of days ago I shared this

Here are the rest of my New Year's cards (to see the other one out check this post).

I punched four evenly spaced holes with a small square punch on the cream paper and cut a paper strip (to look like a ribbon) the same width as the punch window and laced it through the holes (easier done than said). I cut out a V- shape at the ends to make it look like ribbon ends.
Next I glued the cream paper to my white card stock and finished off the rest of the design.
For the first card (pink flower) I used the vortex quilling style, see a tutorial here. I hope my explanation is not confusing, like I said somethings are easier done than said.

A couple of weeks ago I entered a giveaway hosted at Simple Analogy and I won. The prize? 25$ to spend at Sasha's Gilded bee Etsy Shop.
I was afraid for the parcel since our postal workers have been on strike over the last month but finally today it arrived

New year's cards.

Happy new year to you! If for nothing else, its great to be alive today. I want to share with you some cards I made over the last week.My husband owns a business and he requested me to make some cards for 3 of his best clients. I said yes of course!

Here are all the cards together.
I must say I am really proud of the card below. This was my first time to try husking and am happy with how it turned out for the orange flower. The yellow flower was made with a new oval scallop punch I bought myself for christmas :-)

Up close:

The stems are glued down to the paper with very strong glue so they won't bend. (tutorial anyone interested?) I will share the rest of the cards and how I made them over the next few days.

Rolled Paper flower tutorial

I hope you had a wonderful Christmas. Today I want to share a simple way to a make rolled paper flower like this one on this card.

First gather your materials. White glue, quilling paper strips, quilling needle or a pen. My quilling strips are usually A4 length which is quite long for this type of flower so I cut the strips in half.

Apply a tiny spot of glue to the end of a strip.

Next roll the paper around the handle of the quilling needle or pen or whichever round object you are using such that the spot of glue will hold to the rest of the strip like so,

proceed to roll the rest of the paper and add another spot of glue at the end so that the coil will not unroll.

Remove the coil carefully and set it aside for the glue to completely dry.

pinch one end of the paper roll in the same way you do when making teardrop shapes.

Apply glue to the flat sides of the coils and glue 5 of them together to form a flower. I added a shiny bling to the center to add more interest.

The size of your petals will be determined by the circumference of the object you are using to roll the paper. Thanks for reading and share link to your creation if you make a flower using this tutorial.

No fail banana cake.

I have been doing a bit of pre-Christmas baking and today I made banana cake. It was really easy and hopefully you can make it too.

Hot cake just out of the oven

30 very delicious minutes later.

Gather your ingredients-

2 ripe bananas
2 tablespoons melted prestige margarine.
1 cup of sugar
1 egg, beaten.
2 tsp banana essence
2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp salt
2 cups plain wheat flour
1 tsp baking powder
2 tablespoons lemon juice.

Steps
Mash the bananas and mix with the margarine. With an electric mixer beat in the sugar, salt, egg, banana essence together. Add to the banana-margarine mix. Add the rest of the ingredients and mix with a wooden spoon. pour into a tin and bake for 40 minutes.
Let it cool and serve on a cute plate.

I had planned to ice or frost the cake but it didnt stand a chance. My husband ate his with coffee while Jay ate his with yoghurt. The verdict was unanimous- yum, yum, yum! I see more banana cake in my future.

Welcome to day two of my handmade Christmas cards series. This time I added a quilled flower the card.

I love the colors on the flower, Orange with a dash of yellow, and a shiny rhinestone to make it interesting. You may be wondering if I don't own any other papers, well I do. Last July I made wedding invitation cards for a friends wedding and I had a lot of leftovers so I am using bits of that in my cards.
Tomorrow I promise there will be a different color :-). Enjoy.

Handmade Christmas cards, Day one

I always give out handmade cards for Christmas and this year is no exception. I will share my handmade christmas cards with you over the next couple of days and how I made them. I hope you will be inspired as you do your own holiday crafting.
I used paper embroidery technique to make my first card.

I searched online for a simple Christmas image ( I found one here) , then printed it out on normal paper. Next, I taped the paper over the cream card stock and punched holes with a safety pin through both papers. Lastly, I used pink embroidery thread to make "back stitches" on the holes and voila, an embroidered card.
If you don't have Christmas stamps, have no fear. Type your sentiment on Ms Word using a fancy font then print on cardstock.
I was tempted to go overboard with the card but since am making lots of them It's best to keep things clean and simple.

Easy ribbon bookmark.

Dog-ears are ugly right? So if you have 10 seconds to spare, make yourself an easy paper clip- ribbon bookmark.
You probably have all the equipment on hand so here we go in three easy steps.

Gather materials:- ribbon and paper clip

Loop ribbon over paper clip

Make a knot.

And voila, you are done.

Notice how my book has been ruined by repeated folding of pages.

You can add beads to the ribbon or use a really pretty ribbon. Have a lovely weekend.

My first digital scrapbook page

I recently got a copy of MyMemories scrap-booking software, and while having no previous experience in scrap-booking, I am always happy to learn new skills.
The software is easy to use, the main challenge for me was deciding which cute papers and elements to use.
This picture of my baby was taken almost two years ago and it brings so many happy memories to go over his old pics.

I have read elsewhere that it can be used for making cards, calendars and movies. I like the idea of being able to make personalized calendars.
This is the first page I made and I hope to get better at it.
Off I go to play with my new toy.

Zipper pouch

I was lucky to find this large sheet of quilted fabric with a cute duck/apple print and I bought it intending to sew potholders and mittens.

The fabric has a thin batting hence is quite sturdy and I thought I'd sew a zipper pouch to hold my make up and other knick knacks that end up getting lost in my purse.
I used the only zipper that was at hand which unfortunately happened to be purple and having no black thread I used white. I still have some left over fabric and if I make another one I will use a matching zipper ( blue or white ) and matching thread.

I still have enough fabric left over for the mittens and pot holder and a few more pouches, Maybe even a boxy pouch like this:

I am sewing more for myself nowadays and I have two tops already that I will share as soon as I get a chance to take the pictures.
One using the Sorbetto top pattern from Collette the other one from a free magazine pattern.

Carrot-Cinnamon cake

I hope you had a fantastic weekend.
I have been wanting to make carrot cake ever since I saw this recipe from Dana's blog. I love that the recipe calls for cinnamon and I am a lover of all things cinnamon ( cinnamon scented candles, cinnamon flavored gum, cinnamon flavored lip balm etc).
These are the ingredients I used.

3 large carrots
1/2 cup Vegetable oil

1 1/2 cups regular sugar

3 eggs

2 tsp vanilla essence
2 cups flour

2 tsp baking powder

1 tsp salt

5 tablespoons cinnamon

2 tsp ginger

1 cup milk and 2 tsp fresh lemon juice.

Check for the baking instructions here. The cake was a hit and everyone asked for more.

Another thing I loved about the recipe is that there is no creaming of butter and sugar which is usually the first step in most cake recipes and which I am so poor at.

Quilled leaves blog hop

Welcome to the sweet leaves blog hop organized by Sandy Diaz of The Sweet Spot . For this challenge, I created a birthday card using four of my favorite card making techniques: Stamping, paper piecing, punching and quilling.
You can find a paper piecing tutorial here. I used a Fiskar's punch to make the tiny butterflies while for the large one, I stamped the image on yellow card stock then carefully cut out the butterfly.
To create the leaves ( I was going for grass ), I got the idea from Suganthi's blog ( here ) but I did not enclose the loops since I wanted an uneven bushy look.

Quilled easter cross

I made this quilled cross with a tutorial I found at Suganthi's (DAYDREAMS) blog where she used a comb to make petals. I did not have a special quilling comb so I used my normal hair comb! I made three identical petals and made the fourth one longer then glued them together to make a cross. I made some folded paper roses ( roses tutorial here) to add color. Lastly I stamped the sentiments and glued it on. Hope you like my card.

This technique is very easy and well explained at Suganthi's blog. She makes really neat cards and quilled jewelery with amazing photo's and tutorials. Do pop in and see her amazing work.
I made this card for a special friend of mine I hope she likes it.

Hello friends,
I hope you none of you was an April fool (someone fooled me but it is too embarrassing to tell).
Last month I won a giveaway hosted by one of my favorite blogger Ann Martin who has a lovely blog called all things paper where she shares inspiring ideas, tutorials and has the best guest artists.

I made these roses using Ann's tutorial

I won my choice of quilling strips from Diane Boden Crane of THE JJ Quilling design, Diane was kind enough to send me two quilling needles and glue though that was not part of the win.
I love the graduated strips that give you coils that are dark on the outside and light on the inside and I used a purple on on this card.

The butterfly was punched with the small Fiskar's butterfly punch.
Be happy today as you enjoy all the flowers outside and hope we all get lucky with giveaways.

Baby boy card.

One of my good friends recently got a baby boy and I am planning to visit her this weekend. I whipped up a baby boy card. I have never done a card for a boy before since I usually use lots of flowers, twirls, and girly colors but I loved the challenge and I must say this card will be hard to part with (ok! not so hard).
I googled boat images and found one that I liked, I cut it out by hand and pieced it to creat the boat. I used this cute button that has been in my stash for like 8 years (seriously) that was too cute I could never find the perfect project for it. I had to add something quilled hence the waves. I also added some blue rhinestones to bring on a bit of shine. The sentiment was stamped on white paper and framed on the same handmade paper from the last card.

Queencake.......with a cherry on top.

I love cakes especially queencakes (or cupcakes as they are commonly known by most people).
While I have never quilled a cupcake before, I have seen lots of these on the internet and these little beauties are so easy to make, I wondered why I had not tried it before.

I have had the Just rite pre-inked stamps forever and have not used them before so I stamped " precious little one" to celebrate a new baby. The sentiment was framed with teddy bear punch outs from a never used punch. I spent last weekend making and drying handmade paper which I used as a base for the Queen/cup cake.

Happy Monday friends.
Another birthday card this time with only two colors green and yellow.
A lot my favorite challenges are celebrating green/yellow so I was inspired to make a card with this color combo.
The other day at the mall I found a pack of "Happy birthday" foil confetti on sale and I bought it without really knowing what I was going to use it for. Good thing I did because I am loving using them on my cards..

I have been reading about Paper Piecing and I began looking for a simple project that I can tackle.Then I found this cute little fella (google cartoon crabs).
I printed out the image and traced it on some red card stock. Although the little parts were hard to cut by hand I would say this is something I will do again. I also added a bit of quilling since he looked so lost on the sea of white paper.
So don't be crabby, you will get well soon.

Somehow I kept of thinking of Sebastian from THE LITTLE MERMAID ( I really loved the cartoon series waaaaaaaaaaaay back when- early 90's).

Hi friends,
I would like to thank everyone who dropped by and left such sweet comments on the blog hop last month and to say hello and welcome to my new followers.
This is one of the many cards I have been making for this valentine. Lots of red and a splash of orange, some bling a quilled flower.

I took a road trip this week to Nanyuki, a small town right at the foot of Mt. Kenya. I had lots of fun seeing new places and visiting friends.

Blue birthday card

Good morning friends.
A good friend has a birthday coming up and she happens to love color blue. I like to use lots of different colors on my cards so I was not so sure if I would love the card but I must say it turned out beautiful. A bit understated and off my usual style but nice all the same.

A bit of bling on the flowers and silver glitter glue to highlight the sentiment. My biggest crafting wish right now is to have a border punch! I can't find them anywhere in my city and paypal does not work in my country so buying online is out of the question.
